Social Media – Doing It Properly

•June 14, 2010 • 2 Comments

Helping Businesses who are Doing it Badly Do it Well

One day last week I contacted an old client of mine who I’d done a stack of SEO for in the past. It had been particularly successful getting him to the top of Google for his products in Australia.

Not being a pushy character I’d left it at that, and in the subsequent 8 months, hadn’t mentioned to him that I & my colleagues had gone very hard into Twitter – I’d personally set up something like 35 twitter accounts & then in most cases had been running them part-time for my suite of clients since most of them (despite the best encouragements!) still struggle with the concept – or more pragmatically, struggle with finding the time to do it themselves.

The ex-client said, when I mentioned Twitter: “oh it hasn’t worked for us”. So I asked him for the link to his twitter profile – and as anticipated, he’d followed about 60 people and had about 50 followers – so I flicked him the link for just one of the twitter accounts we’re doing & he got the idea pretty quickly:

http://twitter.com/sydneycafes

Things are traveling at the speed of light as we accelerate into social media (though we still do SEO wickedly well) – and I’m glad to see that videos like the above help us give our new clients some sense of the buzz out there.

There are many proven benefits to Twitter which the vast majority of people don’t know about – for example here’s just 4:

1. Google registers each tweet which includes a link to your website as an all-important Inbound Link. Fantastic for improvements in SEO rankings as a valuable by-product of the primary function of the tweet – which is to bring immediate attention to your company and its products/services.

2. It enables you to build overseas markets which have previously been far more difficult to access.

3. By judiciously following leaders in your industry you have instant access to the cornerstones of their business strategies and can absorb hundreds of ideas which you can directly apply to your own business.

4. Once you are past 2000 followers, every day people will find you and follow you even if you merely do 1 tweet per day!

A new activity here at SEO Therapy is translating English-language websites into French – after we’ve first SEO-ed the website for maximum English market penetration.

Weight Loss Retreats Near Sydney

A friend of mine who was keen to lose about 12 kilos recently went and stayed at Ontrack Weight Loss Retreat in the Blue Mountains, where she had excellent success in budging lifelong “fat reserves”, as well as budging some chronic lifestyle habits – in fact she came away from the retreat with such a renewed attitude that she’s since started a business which is going very well!

While staying at the retreat she befriended the owner, Dave Rawlings, who I was fortunate to meet over dinner and he became my SEO client.

Ontrack Retreats have a stunning location and all the amenities of a first-class resort, which means that I wanted to target long-lead keyphrases such as luxury weight loss resort in Australia as well as the usual ones such as weight loss retreat or weight loss retreat in the Blue Mountains etc:

Weight Loss Retreats Resorts Australia Queensland Sydney Melbourne Perth Brisbane Adelaide Canberra

Weight Loss Retreats Resorts Australia Queensland Sydney Melbourne Perth Brisbane Adelaide Canberra

One of the first things I did for Ontrack Retreats was created a weight loss twitter account, http://twitter.com/weightlossaust which at last glance has around 400 followers, after just 5 weeks:

Weight Loss Resorts Australia Queensland Sydney Blue Mountains Fat Camps Weight Loss Retreats on Twitter

Weight Loss Resorts/Retreats Australia on Twitter

I also undertook the commissioning and writing of a number of weight loss articles which have been shooting up Google rankings.

Articles cover such keywords & phrases as:

Fat Loss Scams & Weight Loss Products

Can Gourmet Food be part of a Weight Loss Training Regime?

Luxury Weight Loss Resorts Holidays & Retreats in Australia

What these articles do, apart from being a very rich source of inbound links to Dave’s website, is create the space to have an animated banner (see examples of it on the top of the three pages above). I sourced an excellent designer who did a great job with the banner and in fact it’s now being used on other high traffic web pages that are not about weight loss – so it’s an extremely versatile piece of media.

Some juicy inbound links created today for Ontrack Weight Loss Retreats:

Interested in working in SEO in Australia?

SEO Jobs in Sydney Australia Melbourne Brisbane Search Engine Optimisation Employment

This job vacancy that has appeared (but will likely be filled by the time you read this) at least gives us all a sense of what a large company such as Virgin Mobile expects from their SEO staff.

Most of it is dead easy common sense, as much of SEO is – once you’ve got your skill set up in it anyway.

Here’s their spiel:

Here at Virgin Mobile, we are seeking a talented Web Search Specialist to take up an exciting new role to develop and manage the search strategy, maximising the search engine visibility to improve site traffic, sales and cost-to-serve. This position will act as the central point to co-ordinate and plan the delivery of the content and search strategy, and will involve working closely with colleagues in the online sales and marketing teams (both internal and external).

About the Role

  • Develop and deliver VMA’s search strategy in relation to current media communication channels
  • Ensure content strategy delivers to both brand and acquisition goals
  • Identify key objectives and how VMA will deliver against these (Short, Medium and Long term)
  • Deliver content strategy in line with best practice, and monitor, report and improve on results
  • To increase visibility of VMA’s search engines’ natural search listings
  • Develop & implement ‘best practice’ SEO principles through the identification of determining factors e.g. content, design & technology & links
  • Indirectly manage internal stakeholders to ensure online best practice guidelines are implemented
  • Ensure virginmobile.com.au content is easily found & ranked by search engines
  • Improve the quality & relevancy to improve ranking of VMA web pages in natural search listings
  • Develop, implement & refine SEM landing page strategy
  • Realise increased sales volumes through natural search eCommerce campaigns.
  • Maximise ROI through monitoring agency-driven Pay Per Click campaigns.

To be successful in this role

  • At least 3-5 years experience in search-related activities, either in an agency or search organisation and a strong interest in SEO/SEM and all things Digital and eCommerce.
  • Has understanding of search experience and search engine optimisation best practices including appreciation of application interface design and presentation of results.
  • Must understand search engine technologies, taxonomy, metadata tagging, the relationship between search and information architecture, and an understanding of the customer journey.
  • Possess a Bachelor’s/College Degree (typically Marketing, Computer Science/Information Technology or equivalent) – desirable
  • Must be able to advise/train others in Web-related skills. Should have knowledge of industry standard search engine applications like Google Custom Search; familiarity with content management systems; and website metric tools like Omniture SiteCatalyst or Google Analytics.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills and influencing ability.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • The ability to manage to deadlines, whilst recognising limited resources and other priorities in the business.
  • Strong analytical skills and commercial acumen.
  • Project management.
  • Efficient work & time management.
  • Quality orientation and attention to detail.
  • Accountability.
  • Good relationship and people management skills.
  • Cultural fit and alignment to Virgin values.

The salary? Measly for all they expect! $65,000-75,000 + Super + Benefits.

Personally I’d rather keep my current batch of clients and continue to operate at my own maverick cutting edge. I don’t want to be giving out my uniquely developed techniques to a whole batch of other people – best they remain between me and my clients!

Ontrack Weight Loss Retreat - more like a Resort than a Retreat

Once again dearly disinterested readers I have to bring you up to date with the evils of SEO as performed in a dank Sydney office for the edification of all those who seek to profit online.

My latest wicked foray has been a gig for the most excellent people at Ontrack Weight Loss retreats, who have launched in the glorious Blue Mountains: you can see them at http://www.ontrackretreats.com.au

My job has been to write articles for them which come up for Google searches such as:

Weight Loss Retreats in Sydney Australia

Weight Loss Products in Australia

Weight Loss Resorts in Queensland & NSW Australia

Fat Loss Products available in Australia

And many other such phrases.

Weight loss is a very competitive SEO term, with millions of results showing up – but the truth is I love a challenge – and SEO sure provides plenty of those.

One of the first things I did for them was set up a twitter account about weight loss – providing weight loss news, weight loss tips, weight loss advice, weight loss help: hence the creation of http://twitter.com/weightlossaust

We also explored keywords and keyphrases such as fat camps, obesity, childhood obesity, weight loss in the USA, weight loss in the UK, etc. Because after all, people will travel to a lush location such as the Blue Mountains from virtually anywhere, so they can get away from their eating habits and start again.

I’ve sure read up on the topic, and have found that when working for Ontrack, I’ve been eating very sensibly during the day – apples and salmon and celery and stacks of water – good stuff – I reckon I’ve lost 3 kilos just working on their project.

If you’re looking for SEO email me via media@seotherapy.com.au

Testimonials

“Within weeks our SEO operator Stewart Dawes got us onto the first page of Google for a massive range of our most crucial search phrases such as ”kinesiology courses in Sydney”, ”aromatherapy courses in Melbourne”, “remedial massage courses in Adelaide” and scores of similar relevant variables. We’ve clocked up over 12 months being a client and will certainly run for another 12 months and likely beyond. It became apparent to us early on that Stewart Dawes has developed ethical SEO ideas like no other operators – he’s constantly thinking of new strategies – and these strategies consistently get us onto the first page of Google. Have recommended to all my business friends. – Brian Knight, director, the Health Arts College. www.thacollege.edu.au

“My design company told me quite bluntly that I would never get on the first page of Google, even if I paid a million dollars or more – that’s literally what they said to me. However within 2-3 weeks of implementing the SEO program, in fact it was around 10 days, we had achieved significant placements on Google results for the following search engine terms: “tea stores sydney”,  “best teas in Australia”,  “tea shops sydney”, “tea shops brisbane”, “tea shops melbourne”, “tea shops perth”, “online tea stores” and many more. Since the SEO was done, I’ve been receiving orders from as far away as San Fransisco, also the UK, Japan – and orders are coming in every day from all parts of Australia.” – Kerrie McMahon, Director, World Par-Tea Pty Ltd. www.worldpartea.com

“Stewart is someone who works with a client rather than talking at a client. Our previous experience of pimply young whizkids was that they told us what we needed for SEO rather than working with us towards viable outcomes. Stewart is a businessman who understands business and SEO. I’m very grateful for his great work in getting us ‘up there’.” – Ian Hamilton, Director: Alkaway. www.alkaway.com.au

The flow of people, information and products between Western countries such as the USA, the UK and Australia – into Japan – has never been higher – and that’s even after the 2009 economic downturn.

SEO Japan Tokyo Translate English Websites into Japanese

Image of Japan by Penny Durham

People who know me are generally made aware of my 14-year history of Japanophilic pursuits, of which the greatest is having merged my DNA with the Japanese race to produce my most adorable bi-lingual 4-year-old son Jett – he’s an aquarius genius and blessed with his multicultural head-start in life, I can only say I’m honoured to be his daddy and best friend.

Having done SEO on websites for the past 11 years, starting with my own Sydneycafes.com.au site which is #1 on Google for “cafes in Sydney”, “bars in Sydney, “nightclubs in Sydney” and about 800 other worthwhile search terms, about 9 months ago it occurred to me that I should tap into the many very talented people I know from other cultures such as Brazil, France, Germany, Thailand, China, the Philippines, Portugal, the Netherlands, etc … as well as Japan of course.

As such our company can now offer the services of all of the above SEO + Language Translation services, including a range of highly switched on personnel who can translate your English website into Japanese such as the excellent Shiho Suzuki pictured below.

SEO Tokyo Japan Japanese Translation Translators for Websites

SEO Tokyo Japan Japanese Translation Translators for Websites

To contact Shiho you can email media@seotherapy.com.au

Consider the benefits of having one of Sydney’s best SEO / search engine optimisation experts getting your website spot-on for your market, followed by the business development advantages of your website translated into one language, and eventually many, which can profoundly expand the profitability of your business …

The simple fact is – the smart business people are doing it already.

The smartest ones were doing it years ago.

Why not talk to us about it? We get a lot of enquiries so are too busy to badger people indefinitely like a lot of sales and marketing people do. We talk straight and expect you to do the same.
